Awareness Typography

In todays lesson we were editing out abstract magazine designs through typography.

This is the one that i made.

Deforestation Awareness Typography

Through simple use of rotating, resizing and varying opacity i managed to get this effect using appropiate words for powerful effect (e.g. chopping, save us, deforestation etc…). Overall i think it turned out well however there are some minor changes that can be made.

Photo Manipulation

These are some before and afters of pictures that i have edited using photoshop.

Original Image

Simple macro photo taken of a friends eye.

Edited Image 1

In order to obtain this effect i first cropped the image to place the eye directly in the center. Then i masked around the eye and inverted the mask then completely desaturated the image, then i began masking parts of the eye and making them different colours of the rainbow. When the eye was completely coloured i blended the colours together to get a steady hue change across the eye, overall i think that it worked very well and the eye has a large impact.

Edited Image 2

In this version i attempted to obtain a cat-like eye effect, which i did through similar methods with the first version of masking the eye and desaturating everything around it, then i masked the eye again and used the liquify filter and stretched the pupil. After this i masked the eye and then de-masked the pupil and coloured the iris a yellow-ish colour. Unfortuately stretching the pupil altered the iris details meaning they have been edited so it may look slightly unnatural.

Magazine Analysis

I am currently researching into modern magazine covers and finding out general themes about them. Alsohow these styles  can be applied to my environmental magazine.

First Magazine

Belle Magazine Front Cover

The magazine, ‘belle’, is an Australian design which covers interior home design and architecture. This particular issue has adapted a light colour mood, using variations of blue along with whites and contrasting browns to give an effective classy look. The colour of the masthead is the same as the main image’s chair and foot stool. The main image is kept simple with only a few items and not overcomplicating or intimidating the viewers. The unusual thing about this magazine is that they have taken an unorthodox technique which is to have the first letter not be a capital (‘belle’). The cover line has put (‘AMAZING SPACES’) followed by the rest of the line to encourage the viewer to read this, and as space is often a key component to interior design, this will encourage them to read on. The target audience is australian home owners with an interest in interior design and perhaps a reasonable amount of money or looking to redesign.

Second Magazine

E Magazine Front Cover

‘E’ is an environmental magazine which is based primarily around global warming and the ways in which it is caused and how we can prevent it. This particular issue is based on College’s around the world going green (this may include encouraging them to not waste power). The symbols on the beanie of the main image are appropiate to the magazine as the area recycling symbols and other environmental topics. The masthead is very basic and does not correlate with any other colours in the image. The background is simple to not over complicate the image. There is, however, no target audience, although it may not appeal to younger children, it essentially is not aimed at anyone.

Third Magazine

Vogue Magazine Cover

‘Vogue’ is a women’s fashion magazine which is very popular amongst 20-middle age women. The cover is intriguing and very clear about what the magazine is, everything is red, black and white giving an eye catching effect. The masthead matches colour with the main images models dress. All of the cover text is big, simple text with clear points. The model stands out because she is in front of the G in ‘Vogue’ which gives the impression of the main image coming away from the cover (towards the readers). The target audience is middle aged women who are interested in their own appearance.

Magazine Background Designs

I have begun the development of an environmental magazine and have gone out an taken some different pictures to use as a background for this magazine.

First Picture

Photograph 1

Edited Version P1

Both of these images have been reduced in size in order to be uploaded so it will not be a problem for either to fit on a magazine cover.

In the edited version i used the magic wand tool to create a mask around the leaf which i then went into hue/saturation > Colorize > then played about until i got the desired effect. I then masked the leaf and reduced the brightness of it to give a better contrast against the background.

Second Picture

Photograph 2

Edited Version P2

Both images have been resized. In the edited version i used the magnetic lasso tool to go around the edge of the leafs and then went into Filter>Sharpen>UnSharp Mask.. where i changed the radius to make the leaf clearer, i then went onto inverse the mask and darken the background leaves in hue/saturation > lightness, these things made the leaf stand out far more.

Third Picture

Photograph 3

I decided to play around with this picture quite a bit as, in certain lights/colours/shades, it can appear to be many different things.

Photograph 3 Edited Version 1

In this version, to create this almost bronze/metallic effect i first desaturated the image then went into Image>Adjustments>Variation where i darkened the image and then altered the shadows slightly.

Photograph 3 Edited Version 2

In this version, the bark has had the shadows and highlights darkened as well as a very low saturation to give it a ‘stone’ effect.

Photograph 3 Edited Version 3

In this version, i enhanced the colours to make them stronger and more vivid which gives this picture some real impact as those deep natural greens and browns look good and stand out well.

Photograph 3 Edited Version 4

In this version, i have adapted an autumn-like effect by enhancing the reds and browns within the image whilst still keeping the mystery of what the image is.

Photoshop “Face”

•November 15, 2009 • Leave a Comment

In the last lesson we were practising and developing our skills with Photoshop.

The task was to create a “Face” using only pictures of fruit and vegetables. Here is the one i made;

Fruit/Vegetable "Face"

We used the Selection tool, Mask Wand, Layers and the free transform tool.

Traditional Art

I am looking into different types of art types to create an environmental Magazine cover, currently I am looking at Traditonal Art.

Traditional Art seems to cover a large area of artistic design.
